One of the biggest skills to focus on getting started in the online space in my humble opinion is copywriting (and not just because I’m a copywriter)

Quick story:

When I was working with a 7-figure influencer, he taught me that there were 3 skills that were responsible for his success.

These skills fed off of each other and helped him grow his first online business from his dorm room.

Here they are:

3 High Income Skills

  1. Copywriting
  2. Closing
  3. Speaking

I’ll cover the Closing and Speaking skills on future Freestyle Friday episodes 

but today, we’re going to focus on Copywriting.

The #1 High Income Skill

What is Copywriting?

Copywriting is simply words that sell.

If you look at any advertisement, brochure, or text.

Copy are the words on those documents that are designed to persuade people to make a purchase.

This is a skill that is incredibly valuable in the online marketing space. 

Since your words on a webpage is all that people will see before they decide to make a purchasing decision.

The words on landing pages, sales pages, websites, social media ads and content. 

Any form of writing online. 

There are two different forms of copy online that is used for different purposes:

  1. Brand awareness
  2. Direct response

Brand awareness copy is any form of advertising that lets you know about a company and their products and services.

Direct response copy is designed to get the reader to take a specific action – sign up for a newsletter, respond back to an ad, or make a purchase.

And if you want a higher earning potential with your online biz…

Direct Response > Brand Awareness

The reason why I would recommend picking up the high income skill of copywriting is because your skill level in copywriting will influence your other high income skills.

And they all feed onto each other.

Here’s a venn diagram of what your skills looks like:

Long Form Sales Letters are the bread and butter for any form of direct response copywriting online so let’s dive into the pieces of it that can apply to all short form copywriting online as well.

Headline

The headline’s main job is to do one thing and that is to gain attention.  It’s not to call out the promise of the copy, or the benefits.

It’s to get someone to stop scrolling and desire to read more. 

Without getting someone to stop and pay attention to your copy, the rest of the copy won’t matter.

Lead

The lead is the first one or two sentences in an email or 1 to two paragraphs in a sales letter that is designed to qualify the reader a little more to get them to continue reading.

Body

The body is where a sales letter makes an argument for the promise and benefits of the product or service.

Transition

The transition phrase segways into the final piece of the copy.

Call to Action

The specific thing that you want the reader to do.  Whether that be clicking to book an appointment, check out a sales letter, register for a webinar, or make a purchase.

That’s the basic format of any form of copywriting.
